One week ago the DLD 07 started. I was there. And I liked it. The overall excitement, coolness and cheer was somewhat exhausting. :-) But I met some interesting people, heard some interesting talks and had a great (though often interrupted) brainstorming chat with Tariq from netvibes.

Some of the notes I took:

• Catarina Fake mentioned that publishers usually do not have a R&D or structured innovation process. I noticed that too. Innovation is stuck between several people's gut feeling and interpersonal likes and dislikes. And the process is not failure-tolerant: Once a topic fails, it is "burnt" for some time and not tried again in a different variation.


• NGOs do use Skype a lot.


• The One Laptop per Child Laptops are really cool. It's a shame that the "Buy two, get one" method of distribution (you pay for two and one goes to a child in need) is just a legend.


• The woman behind Anshe Chung is really rather shy and just likes to play role games. She invented her character to be powerful and self-conscious. Her husband talked about their Second Life business and how the virtual character seemed to demand expanding the business to the real world.


• It would be cool the merge Second Life with Google Earth.


• At metacafe funny and international videos (that is especially, videos without language) are most successful. So I suggest they let users write local subtitles for their local platforms. This way you can make videos with text international too.


• And if I would want to make money on metacafe, I'd produce a cooking show series. :-)

There was too little and strange food. And it was way too crowded. But I'd go there again next year. :-)

Something for my former co-students, now psychologists and some looking for a job... Instead of being a classic psychotherapist with a practice, offer services that fit into the trend of Dr. Kawashimas brain-improvement game.

I imagine this advertisement: "I cannot concentrate at work. What ca I do?" "I can't possibly remember the names of people. " "I want to get myself organized better, so I can get things done more easily." "How do I learn to win arguments?" ... Individual counseling. Guaranteed results in just 3 sessions.

There is a lot of books for that. But coaching might be more effective here.

Mein Großvater war zu Besuch und erzählte mir drei kleine Geschichten weiter, die er von meinem Ur-Ur-Großvater gehört hat. Der Ur-Ur-Großvater war Textilkaufmann am Anfang des Jahrhunderts und ist weit herumgekommen.

Einmal war er in Argentinien zu einer großen Hochzeitsfeier geladen. Das Essen war fantastisch, die Braut war wunderschön und am meisten freute er sich auf die Hochzeitstorte: eine saftige, weiße Quarktorte mit ganz vielen Rosinen, so wie er sie am liebsten mochte. Als es nun daran ging, die Torte anzuschneiden, lief ihm schon das Wasser im Mund zusammen. Die Braut setzte an und es machte Bbsssssssssssssssst! und alle Rosinen waren als Fliegenschwarm aufgestoben.

Jedes Mal, wenn er mit dem Schiff in den Süden fuhr, war das Passieren des Äquators ein großes Ereignis. Die Offiziere machten sich einen Spaß daraus, einen roten Faden vor das Teleskop zu spannen und die mitreisenden Damen hindurchgucken zu lassen. "Da ist der Äquator!" Große Freude und Jubel. Der Weltgereiste schmunzelte nur, als die Offiziere ihre Geschichte weitertrieben mit dem Hinweis, dass man Glück habe: "Jetzt ist Ebbe, da schaut der Äquator aus dem Wasser!"

Einmal war er in Südafrika in einer Badestube. Die Kabinen waren mit Stoffbahnen voneinander getrennt. Nebenan badete eine Dame mittleren Alters und versuchte anzubandeln. "Ach, sehen Sie, unsere Schuhe stehen direkt nebeneinander!" Worauf er trocken erwiderte: "Na, hoffentlich passiert nichts."

Am Donnerstag abend durfte ich in München ein Stück Berliner Kultur erleben. Ein lieber Freund mit gutem Geschmack hatte mich auf die Gästeliste dieser "Lesung mit Sitzdisko" gesetzt, als Geburtstagsgeschenk. Und so stapfte ich dann durch die winterliche Kälte zu einem abgelegenen Winkel der Stadt. Alicja, die schon eher da war, hatte herausgefunden, dass man eine kleine, dunkle Treppe hinter der Bushaltestelle heruntergehen muss, dort unten klopften wir an eine dräuende Stahltür. Ich bin nicht mehr auf Jobsuche!! Gestern habe ich vom Franzis Verlag (in Poing bei München) die Zusage bekommen, dass sie mich wirklich haben wollen und mir auch ein gutes Gehalt bezahlen werden. Das hat mich sehr gefreut, denn es ist eine gute Firma und ein Job, bei dem ich sicher sehr viel lernen und Spaß haben kann. Ab dem 14. November bin ich dort Junior-Produktmanager (oder sagt man inzwischen Managerin?) im Bereich Consumer Software. Das heißt, ich werde mir überlegen, was die Welt bzw. der deutsche Markt für tolle neue Software braucht, und dann für die Umsetzung sorgen, so dass am Ende noch ein Gewinn für den Verlag übrigbleibt. Entwickelt wird bei uns nicht im Haus, sondern per Auftrag, oder wir kaufen andere Produkte ein. Man kann dann z.B. demnächst im Mediamarkt stehen und von mir verfasste Texte auf Softwarekartons lesen. Und natürlich die Software dann auch vor lauter Begeisterung gleich kaufen. :-)
Die Stelle ist zunächst auf ein Jahr befristet. Ich hoffe, ich werde in dieser Zeit lernen, wie man auf einem Markt mit kleinen Margen und viel Konkurrenz immer noch erfolgreich Produkte platzieren kann. Und ich hoffe natürlich, da auch eine lustige Zeit zu haben. :-)

Ein sehr schönes Paper darüber, wie das Medium Email das Kommunikationsverhalten beeinflusst.

"Lange galt die E-Mail als das demokratische und egalisierende Kommunikationsmedium schlechthin. Mittlerweile aber haben die alten Briefkopf-Unterscheidungsmerkmale – in veränderter Form – Eingang in die elektronische Kommunikation gehalten. Der Stil zeigt den Status: Hochrangige Manager zeigen den Zeitdruck, unter dem sie stehen, durch nachlässige Orthografie, das mittlere Management dagegen schreibt eher E-Mails für die Ewigkeit: Korrekt, ausufernd und mit einem Ehrfurcht einflößenden Adressanhang."

So what did I bring back from I-KNOW in Graz?

• An impression of what a nice conference should look like (lots of food, lots of places to sit down and talk, less importance of being important...). More of that kind!


• Email adresses of people who want to read my thesis. :)


• Idea of „Boring KM" for SMEs who do not look for complicated solutions (that make for nice academic papers), but for simple things that usually work and do not cost much. SMEs do not need the label KM but want stuff that makes their life easier. As a book, this should appear along with „KM Bad Practice: What did not work and our assumptions on why."


• Lots of interesting-sounding keywords to learn more about. And names of applications to check out.


• Plans for a Knowledge Management Spring Camp 2006 in Trento. With Roberta Cuel!


• Blurred pictures of people, because I don´t like using the flash.


• News from the NEPOMUK project.

Soooo I finished my thesis in time and I am very happy about it! :-) 3 and a half months are really not that much but nevertheless some interesting things could be found.
Now it has to go through a Siemens-internal release process (to check for confidential contents) and then I can publish it online. (Will take about two weeks.)

I also want to write a more readable summary of about 5-10 pages. In case I am not too busy searching for a job in Munich. :)

I will go to I-KNOW! "5th International Conference on Knowledge Management", 29 June - 1 July 2005, Graz Austria. Fortunately the student prices are very affordable. :-)

Google has some nice tricks to offer. Some of them are not very obvious to the normal user.

So I survived moving to Munich and started working on my Diplom thesis at Siemens.
I want to create a model of knowledge work processes that focusses on the individual and helps improving the knowledge worker's effectiveness by evaluating how tools and techniques fit into these processes. [read more...]

My exams are done and we are moving to Munich these days where I want to write my Diplom. I have to notice that moving gets worse every time. This might be due to getting older and more easily worried or to the growing amount of possessions and memories to pack and transport. (Hey, I am still young I go for the second one.) [read more...]

I like the term that Heiko brought up: Pieces of information can (only?) be "cues to knowledge" which means they give us hints to the knowledge in our head. Reminder notes are an obvious example. Or old family pictures. You might see any information under that perspective. [read more...]
